I’ve been involved in starting a number of businesses, and launching many products. To get good market recognition, you need a good name, and you’ll need a domain name that matches it. That means a domain name which is short, memorable, relevant to the business, and (most importantly) not registered by someone else. Finding such a domain name can be a pain. The most popular top-level domain, .com, has around a hundred million registrations (as of Q4 2009). Whilst there are other top-level domains available (like .co.uk in the United Kingdom, and .biz), it’s .com an international audience will probably look to first. And besides, if someone has already registered the .com, it’s quite likely the business name is already being used.
Finding a free .com can a slow and laborious process. synym.com was created because I got bored of doing it manually. Instead of checking domain name after domain name, synym.com makes them up for you, based on search terms you provide. It then produces a list of possible domain names, all of which are available for you to register. It would be easy for you to produce a list of domain names you would like, but most of them won’t be available for you to register. What we do is the opposite: we produce a list most of which we know you probably won’t like, but all of them are available for you to register. After all, you only need to find one which works.
